Join Tatiana Kolovou for an in-depth discussion in this video Self promotion, part of Finding Your Introvert/Extrovert Balance in the Workplace.
- Self-promotion is the fine art of sharing our successes without being obnoxious braggarts. As introverts, we need visibility, and sharing our successes helps the cause. My dean stopped me in the hallway one day and asked, "How are things going?" And I said, "Um, everything's good." Ugh, this would have been the perfect opportunity to share one of my recent successes. I vowed not to miss the chance again.
Every couple of weeks, assess your positive outcomes. Reflection and research are things we do well, introverts. So reflect on your own success stories, or you brag bites, as Peggy Klaus calls them in her book on tactful bragging. If the dean asks me tomorrow how things are going, I'm armed with a tidbit or two of interesting work I've been doing. I'm ready to share. Balance all the time you spend doing great work with a little time talking about what you're doing.
When you conclude a project or get some great feedback, drop your boss an email. I challenge you to share one brag bite with someone as soon as you complete this course.
