Prepare for a difficult conversation

- I once had a conversation with an executive that went like this, "One of the managers I have is a loser!" "What's he doing that he shouldn't be doing?" I asked. "Hard to say, he's just not that good." "Well what's he not doing that he should be doing?" I continued. "Well, it's hard to describe," "but one thing's for certain, I'm done babysitting." Clearly this executive needed to have a conversation with his manager, but he couldn't really articulate what was going on. If you and I can't articulate what needs to change, our communication will lack clarity and the people we're in conflict with won't understand what we want. We'll just sound like we're complaining, but we can prepare for the difficult conversation ahead by doing two things. The first is to get clear about the situation. Ask yourself two questions. First, what is this person doing that they should not be doing? And second, what is the person not doing that they should be doing? For example, you think your employee…
