- So I hope some of these ideas you practice. Teach others, build potential, it is important for the society as well. It's important for your company as well, because in any society it's, again, 2% of the people have 98% of the impact. So here I want to tell you something I experience, and it has a lesson in it. I was teaching at Harvard Business School, and most of these students came 22, 23, 24 years of age.
After about 20 years, I thought I'd call some of them who became CEOs of large companies. I called one of them, and in India, no matter how rich you are, how big you are, you always respect the instructors. I got the same treatment, Joe said, "Professor, come home, have dinner with us. Send you a plane, you stay at our house." I did that, wife went to bed at 10 pm, he and I have been talking now.
We've already consumed a bottle of wine. And I said, "Joe, I have a confession." And he says, "Yes, professor." I said, "I gave you a poor grade." He said, "No, I took it to heart." So I said, "You became, in 20 years, to be CEO of a very large company. How did you do that?" He said, "I did three things. One of them, I learned how to create time." I said, "Tell me how." He said, "First thing I took to heart to focus only on three things." I've never heard that before.
Second, "Recruit people better than you are." I said, "I've heard that many before." He say, "I took it to heart." I said, "Don't you feel insecure to do that?" He said, "No, if somebody's better than me, he or she deserves it. I'll find something else." This is America, for people who want to work hard, who want to grow, who want to learn plenty of jobs, and maybe better jobs than I am in. He says, "It's the third one that I really followed. I will recruit better people than I am, and every six months I will decide, the most important things I'm doing, which ones I will not do six months later.
That give me capacity to look beyond, look up, learn new skills, at the same time I'm developing other people." So these are the three gems. They are real, come from a real person. I like you to absorb them, practice them. You too can create time. Time is constant, it also doubles and triples your capacity.
