- If you're a leader and you're looking to build your own high performing team, here are your next steps. First, you need to create your draft high-performing team plan. And I say draft because it's going to change. But you need to document your thoughts and lay out how you're going to take your team from where it is to where you want it to be. Next, you'll need to get your team together and discuss that draft plan as well as your goals and get their input on how that plan needs to change. If there are things that are missing, you'll want to include them, if there are things they're not comfortable with, you'll need to adjust. And get their input on what that ultimate plan is going to be because the team needs to own that plan. Once you've received that input, you need to document the final plan and then go back to the team and get their commitment to executing against it. Because again, if they're committed to that plan, you're likelihood of achieving your goal goes up dramatically. You'll then need to prioritize your efforts in terms of the gaps you're going to fill on the team, the initiatives you're going to pursue, and where you're going to spend your personal time and effort. And then last, you'll need to measure the impact of these changes against very specific goals. And those goals should be the ones you laid out in the plan as well as the holes you're going to try and fill on that team. And if you follow this approach and take those next steps, your team will be well on its way to being high-performing. Now, if you're not the leader of the team and you're the member of a team that's not yet high-performing, but you want to advance the quality of the team that you're on, take a look back at all the elements of building a high-performing team and ask yourself where can you personally contribute and advance the teams capabilities? Perhaps you can help draft a vision or a mission. Or you can help with prioritization efforts or identifying skill gaps that need to be filled and help train your colleagues. So think about where you can personally advance that team as well as have conversations with your leader about where you want that team to go.
