Motivating by getting your hands dirty
As a leader, you do want to be seen as an authority figure, but the very best leaders are also seen as a member of the team. Only when they see you as similar to them do they become fully committed. However, there are many things working against you. You have a bigger title and status, you might have a bigger office, a preferred parking space, more degrees, more accomplishments, you name it. There are many things that make you seem different from your employees. Your goal is to reduce the perception that you are removed from them. The single best way to achieve this, is to go to their offices, or to the call center or to the shop floor, and get your hands dirty doing the work. Right alongside of your employees. When you do, you'll show them you care about the details of the work. That you respect what they do. And that you don't think you're above getting down in the trenches and doing some real work too.
