- So, when you're thinking about motivation, you have to look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow came up with this in the 1950s, I think it was, so it's been around for 60 years. Hasn't really been improved upon. He was originally researching happiness and then his theory was used by people at work, happiness at work became motivation. And I must admit, when I first saw Maslow's hierarchy, I thought, I don't know, but the more I think about it, the more brilliant I think it is. Anyway, who am I to judge the mighty Maslow, to be honest? And what he said was, there are five things that humans want and not only that, but they're in order, so each one builds upon the one before. So, if you were parachuted into the jungle, the first need you would have is just to survive. You'd look for food and water and shelter, and if you're cold or you're hungry, you don't think about anything else.
