- Almost every organization I know of works with a budget. It's easy to let budgets trump execution. When a strategic opportunity presents itself, show you value execution of the strategy over meeting an arbitrary set of internally generated projections. Making investments in driving execution sends a strong message to the organization that you're more serious about bringing the strategy to life than you are about hitting some numbers. One company I worked for exemplified this mindset. The CEO didn't care about Wall Street analyst expectations. He wanted long-term growth and value creation for the company. He was often willing to miss earnings and make an investment now in marketing a product or launching a new business if it gave him a long-term competitive advantage and the investment was on strategy.
