Making execution practical

- It's not enough to just tell your team go execute the strategy. The strategy must be broken down into strategic themes. You then split those themes into programs. Programs are then broken down into individual projects and those projects have tactical execution plans. The execution plans are the day-to-day work you expect from your teams. Without tactical plans, the team's effort is probably going to be aimless. Non-project activities should also be linked to the strategic plan. If the team is managing daily operations, they need to know how those operations drive strategic outcomes. This gives their work meaning. It helps them make choices in the absence of guidance. If you're not there to tell them what to do, but they understand how their activities are driving strategic outcomes, they can make better choices.
