- If you're going to be successful in your job, or in your life, whether it's doing a project or setting up a business or having a great career you'll need your health. You can't get anything done if you don't have energy or if you're frequently ill. So the basic requirements are to eat well, sleep well, and get some exercise. These sound obvious don't they? And yet most of us don't do them. Especially when we're working really hard on a project or a career. We don't have the time to exercise and we're too tired to exercise when we get home from work.
Sometimes we might cut into our sleep if we're working late in the evenings. Or we might not sleep very well if we're under stress or we're traveling. And we might eat all sorts of junk food if we're working late or traveling. So I think it's important to get a grip of these key basics of health and to do so you need to take a look at your habits. Find a time of day when you can exercise and get into the habit, just a short walk or run each morning or evening. Or cycle to work or head into the gym on the way home.
Maybe go with a friend who will encourage you to go. Maybe buy some weights and use them for five minutes in the morning or five minutes in the evening when you get back from work. Fitness makes you think more clearly and with more energy. The body effects the mind so this is important. And then think about your food. Find some recipes that you like which are healthy. Or if you choose to eat out a lot there are healthy places to eat. And you can maybe get into the habit of eating food that's good for you, most of the time at least.
And then there's sleep. Because we used to live in caves we still like a bedroom that's cool and dark. My wife gave me a really good quality blindfold mask for sleeping on airplanes. It's really comfortable and it blocks out all light. And it's amazing, I can sleep for hours happily now on flights. But the main thing for sleep is to get enough by going to bed early enough. If you're a night owl like me it's important to have the discipline to get into the habit of getting to bed a bit earlier than you really want to.
Yes your brain is still spinning, and you could still do some more good work, but you'll suffer in the morning. So it's time to switch that computer off or that TV off and head for bed. And if you can't sleep because you're thinking about work, about all the things that you need to remember to do tomorrow or the things that you need to say in that difficult meeting, then write it all down so that your head is clear and ready for sleep. So what improvements can you make to your sleep, your eating habits, and your exercise? Maybe have a conversation with your partner or a close friend and come up with a plan and then get the habits going so that you can get this vital, success foundation in place.
