Introduction to leading effectively

- In every organization I know there are increasing demands for quality and quantity of results. But leaders have limited time and energy. The question is, how can leaders get better results by working smarter and not harder? Understand where you're currently investing your time and energy. I refer to that as your leadership capital. Once you know where you're investing, you need to assess the return you're getting on that investment in the form of team member results. The combination of leadership capital invested relative to team member results generates what I call the leadership matrix. That leadership matrix helps you identify the unique leadership needs of the members of your team. With that deeper understanding of their needs, you can make smarter decisions about how and where you invest your very limited time and energy to get the best overall team results. Some of the benefits of using this method of looking at your leadership capital invested and understanding team member results are first, you'll be able to recognize team member performance patterns. This isn't about putting people in a box or categorizing people. It's about understanding how your interactions with them generate specific results. Another benefit is you can select appropriate leadership techniques. Not everybody likes to be led the same way. This method helps you understand that different people on your team need different leadership styles. You'll also get better results for the time and energy that you invest. You'll give your team members actionable feedback that they can apply immediately to generate better results. You can create individual development road maps to help build that next generation of leaders. Last, you'll be able to identify candidates for your succession plans. Leading effectively is about making appropriate investments of your time and energy with all members of team in order to generate the best results possible. Generating a clear picture of those investments and the results you get will give you a road map for shifting your time and energy in a way that improves everyone's performance.
