Influencing with storytelling skills

- Skillful storytelling can help you develop your employees, sell product, gain funding for an idea, or just connect with your audience. Executives at companies like Menlo Innovations, United, SAP, Microsoft and Etsy even use the title Chief Storyteller. As a manager, you can influence by applying Harvard Business Review author Carolyn O'Hara's four components of effective storytelling. Identify your core message, use your own experience, highlight a conflict or struggle, impart lessons learned. As an academic and consultant, a lot of time, I coach employees and students on their writing. Writing well is a big part of most jobs, so I use the following story to help people write under pressure. First, the core message of my story is that writing is hard, and it's possible to learn to write even when you don't feel like it. Next, I use my own experience like this.
