- The secret to great impromptu speaking at work is preparation. Here's the golden rule: always assume that you will be called upon to speak, always. That means you have to plan. Now, I know that you can't prepare for some types of episodes. For example, an unplanned hallway conversation. True, you can't plan for that. But most phone calls and meetings you can definitely plan for. You might say, "But I don't have time to plan all of this." First of all, don't think of it as spending time.
