How to network with people you can’t meet in person

- When most people think networking, they usually envision having coffee or lunch with someone, but these days, many of us work with clients or colleagues around the world. How do you network effectively when someone lives thousands of miles away? Of course, you might connect with them occasionally at a conference or a work meeting, but what about the rest of the time? Here's what to do instead. First, start by identifying a small number of people you want to connect with, or stay in touch with if you already know them. You have to be targeted, because it takes some effort and focus to network from far away. Create a list of no more than five or 10 people to focus on at first. Start following them on social media, and think of small, thoughtful ways to engage. Maybe it's liking an article someone shares on LinkedIn, or sharing a post, or asking a thoughtful follow-up question based on something they've shared. If you already know them, you might shoot them a short email periodically…
