How to motivate a team across cultures

- As a manager, you know it's important to have motivated employees. They work harder, they're engaged, and they're less likely to leave. The good news for global managers is that some motivators are universal. The challenge, though, is how you use them depends on the culture you're in. Like tools in a toolkit, motivators need to be used in the right way for the right situation. Let's look at a few examples. While autonomy is appreciated in every culture, what's considered autonomy in one culture can be seen as poor leadership in another. Saying something like, I trust you to figure it out could inspire confidence in someone from a more individually-oriented culture. You believe in her, and that's motivating. Now, if you say the same thing to someone from a more collectivist culture, you might be viewed as irresponsible. Providing more autonomy in a more collectivist situation means providing the support and resources for someone to achieve her goals. The same is true for power…
