- Each performance pattern on the leadership matrix requires you to take a different leadership approach to get the most out of your leadership capital investment. Here's how I'd suggest handling each performance pattern. Your exemplars are your highest performers. For your rising stars, you should be challenging them and creating growth opportunities. If you don't do it, somebody else will, and they might leave your organization. For your domain masters, work hard to retain these people. Make their work easier, recognize them for their outstanding performance. Passengers don't deliver a lot in terms of results, they also don't consume a lot of your leadership capital. Your joyriders require you to focus their efforts, eliminate distractions for them, focus them only on the most important results you expect. Stowaways require more supervision.
