Have a clear ask
- How many times have you left a meeting all fired up about a project or initiative, but then it just sort of withers away and nothing gets done? One of the big reasons is lack of specificity. What do I mean by this? Getting people emotionally engaged is the first step. In order to translate that engagement into action you also need to be specific about what you want them to do and when you want them to do it by. I call it the ask. What are you asking for specifically? And by when? A clear deadline creates urgency. Let's look at a scenario where I ask Elizabeth to help me brainstorm. I'm going to engage her emotionally using personal language, I reinforce her connection and the meaning of the work, and then I make a very clear and specific ask.
