- If you're confronted by someone aggressive at work, the first thing is to remain calm. Our natural instinct is either to give in or to be aggressive back, and both of these are usually bad options. Certainly being aggressive back is highly risky, and you'll probably regret whatever happens next. Some people say that bullies respect people who stand up to them. But there's standing up to them calmly, which is usually good, and standing up to them aggressively, which is definitely a bad idea. Giving in to aggressive people is safer, but the problem is that you're rewarding bad behavior, and they will keep doing it, perhaps getting gradually worse each time. So it probably is best to calmly stand up to them. Here are a few thoughts on how to do this. Start whatever you say with, "I understand." This could take the form of, "I know you're under pressure," or, "I agree, it's incredibly annoying "when it's our most important customer "and the factory promises a date, "and then delivers it…
