- One of the best ways to improve your employees' performance is to set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time-bound. For the most effective goal setting, teach these three ideas to your employees. One, write SMART goals and action steps. Two, visualize success in meeting goals. Three, follow up with goals and celebrate successes. First, let's look at an example of writing SMART goals. Last year I won professor of the year at my university.
