Getting serious about autonomy
Slowly but surely, leadership practices are evolving into more productive territory. One of the best examples deals with employee autonomy. This refers to offering someone flexibility and freedom at work. In years past, we often assumed employees needed to be fiercely micromanaged, so we could account for every minute of their day. Thankfully, for most organizations, those days are gone. Enlightened managers today know that granting autonomy is not only the right thing to do, but the most productive thing to do as well. Studies suggest that workers who are given more freedom in their role at work are more productive and have lower absenteeism. Further, if you care about innovation, you have to believe in autonomy. When autonomy is low, employees simply go through the motions at work. They feel no passion or purpose. But you see, innovation comes from passion.
