- Reputation risk comes in many forms, some we can anticipate others we can't. Even the most comprehensive plans couldn't have possibly anticipated the confusion, destruction and lasting impact to communities, industries and even companies when the World Trade Center towers were hit on 9/11. For reputation risk management to be effective you want to closely monitor internal and external environments. You'll watch for what's happening inside the company, within your leadership team, with your employees, but you'll also pay attention to industry shifts and trends where your company could get swept up in negative perception that's not even your fault. For example if one car company comes under fire for using faulty airbags, well consumers can begin questioning all airbags in all cars and thus impacting their trust in your product and reputation even if you use a completely different airbag product.
