- A good meeting stays on topic but we've all been in meetings where the conversation goes way off tangent. One of two things happens. A, that tangent has everyone frustrated or forgetting the purpose of the meeting. Or B, in great cases, that tangent has contributed to creative problem-solving. As a facilitator, how do you engage the group such that you're managing toward the objective of the meeting, yet leaving enough latitude to explore outside the narrow swim lane? This requires some work before the meeting in addition to during the meeting. First, before the meeting, it's important to get clear on what the objective of the meeting actually is. This sounds rudimentary, but in my experience, meetings don't often have clear objectives and therefore leave too much flexibility to define in the moment what the value of the meeting is.
