Firing without fear

- Firing an employee is never easy, but with some preparation, it can be done with less fear. The first time I fired an employee, she threw her shoe at my head. I waited too long to fire her and let a bad situation become worse. A manager's typical mistake is to delay firing an employee by giving in to fear. Common fears include work disruption, lawsuits, negative reactions like getting a shoe lobbed at you, concerns about impact on our teams and employees, conflict and pain. LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner says, "The biggest lesson I have learned as a CEO "is not to leave the pitcher in the game too long." As managers, we often reason to ourselves why we can't fire someone. But what you should fear is not firing someone who needs to go. Consider what could happen if you don't fire an employee. Some possible negative repercussions are poor customer service, loss of sales, decreased productivity, or the spread of negativity in the office.
