- There's a question we ask ourselves, whether we know it or not, when we face the possibility of engaging in a difficult conversation. The question is, is this going to be worth it? It's easy to get stuck at this question. We feel like we can't make a decision. We oscillate back and forth between what we want and what we don't want. You want to address your employee's poor performance, but you don't want to hurt their feelings. You wanna be honest with your spouse, but you don't want your spouse to get angry. You want your coworker to stop telling inappropriate jokes but you don't wanna lose the friendship. This type of indecision is what I call the inner conflict. You have to resolve the inner conflict before you can successfully engage in a difficult conversation. The first step is to focus on what you want, not on what you don't want.
