Expanding empathy and social skills

- Is everything okay are the most powerful words in a manger's toolbox according to Simon Sinek, author of Leader's Eat Last. Asking a general question like this and then really listening to the answer is a great way to show empathy. One of the best ways to improve your social skills and show your empathy is by applying an active listening technique such as LENSA. I used LENSA recently when coaching a junior faculty member about her upcoming tenure review. Vanessa was concerned that she wasn't going to get tenure. She had been struggling with medical issues during the five years that her performance was being evaluated. I used the first step, listen, to show Vanessa that I understood. For the listen step, do three things. Do not speak. Just listen and show with your nonverbal behavior that you are listening.
