Executives don't want to waste their time. They will always ask this same question and how you answer can make or break your chances for a relationship. Learn how to develop an answer that gets you in the door and leads to more meaningful conversation.
- In your initial meeting with an executive, they'll probably ask something like this, tell me more about yourself. Now don't respond the way everyone else does, with a job title or resume bullet points or with a timeline. I grew up in this place, went to school at that place, blah, blah, blah, generic, generic, generic. Here's a much better way to respond that's concise, genuine, and invites further discussion. Respond with an answer that combines a positive influencer and a core value.
A positive influencer is someone who had a significant positive influence on you, who left a mark on you that's remarkable, who inspires you to be your best. A core value is something you're passionate about, you believe in, or are deeply committed to to make a positive difference for people. Give it some thought. Who are your positive influencers? What are your core values? To make your answer concise, choose one that connects with the other. Example, here comes the question.
Tell me more about yourself. Answer, I've always been passionate about innovation. I think it comes from my grandmother, who used to say, always think for yourself, always look for a better way. Now that's much better, right? That's a real example, by the way. Your positive influencer and core value combination is also a much better bridge to other topics, too. You might go on to say, and that's what led me to study. Or, so I've always looked for jobs that. And then talk about those topics, how you wanna talk about them, not as if you're being forced to read them off of a resume.
It's also a great way to help executives see your potential, to see you beyond your current role or job description. Eventually I want to, or my dream is to. Then fill in your preferred positive future. And give them a chance to help you get there. Are you seeing this? 100% you, 100% genuine, real answers, true answers. More true in every sense than the usual, generic template methods people usually use. So remember, your best answer to the most common question shows the best in you.
Combine your positive influencers and core values to have more positive influence with executives and enable them to see your best self and brightest future.
