Define your avatar
- Several years ago, I attended a training on creating great video content, and the speaker let us in on one of her secrets. When she's filming a video, she posts a large, colored picture of the person who she wants to speak to on the wall in front of her. That way, as she presents, she can see that person and imagine she's having a conversation exactly with them. This keeps her connected to them, and she can even imagine how they might be reacting to what she's saying. That's the idea behind defining your avatar. An avatar is a representation of the exact person or type of person that you want to influence when you speak to your audience. It's not a generalized group of people like older adults living on the East Coast with $40,000 in income. It's Mary Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, who's 62 years old and works at the corner drugstore.
