- Your CEO lets a racial slur fly during a webcast at shareholders' meeting. Your client files are accessed by hackers, your retail website goes down during a Black Friday sales promotion. These events sound far-fetched and impossible right? Not exactly, not today. Preparing for and managing reputation risk means thinking ahead and having a plan. It's important to work together as a team, drive what's communicated and manage the optics of how your company appears during a response. My favorite five steps keeping you in control should anything go wrong are: first, have a different protocol for different types of events. Your CEO letting the f-bomb fly during a morning talk show shouldn't require the same level of triage as your contaminated product making baby sick across the Midwest. Your plan should first assess what's happening, and its possible impact to the business.
