Coaching and mentoring your employees

- One of the key drivers of engagement is employee development. Look ahead to the senior executives in your organization, and notice who was managed and mentored, and by whom. If you're seen as a manager who's a developer of others, you will build a loyal cadre of supporters, and their success will reflect well on you. Coaching and mentoring go hand in hand. Coaching is often task-specific, and transactional, with a focused, short-term orientation. For example, a team member wanted to be coached about the best way to talk to a news reporter. I gave her specific tips and feedback for providing the reporter quotes. We did not have an ongoing dialog. This coaching revealed to me that she took feedback well, which made me willing to coach, and maybe even mentor her in the future. A coaching experience can be a one-off, or a test to see if the coaching can develop into a mentoring relationship. In contrast, mentoring is an ongoing relationship.
