Building a shared purpose

- Once you have a clear and compelling vision and mission statement to get your team to the next level of high performance, think about how you can create a shared purpose for the team, and how that shared purpose can drive behavior. Now what a shared purpose is is you start with the mission, the mission being the articulation of this is why we exist, this is how we behave on a daily basis, and this is how the team creates value. Again, it's a clear and simple statement of that team's existence and its purpose. Combine that with the vision, saying this is where we're going three to five years from now, this is why we're excited, this is the destination. Then you take that vision and mission, combine them, and then think how can you involve your customers in the achievement of that mission and that vision. This is what a shared purpose is.
