- Knowing where your purpose fits into the organization can be challenging. HR wants to own it, marketing wants to own it, social responsibility wants to claim it. But the reality is purpose isn't owned. It's not a tagline or philanthropy or a training initiative. When it's effective, it's baked into the operating model at every level. And it's bigger than just your value prop. Purpose is a lens for decision-making, it's a motivator. Sometimes it comes from the CEO. Other times it's the guiding principle from a single mid-level manager to her team. You know, the other common challenge with purpose is figuring out how it interacts with the mission or vision or a why. My favorite explanation comes from my colleague Roy Spence. In his book, It's Not What You Sell, It's What You Stand For, he says, "Purpose is the difference you're trying to make. "Mission is how you do it.
