- I once had a client for a large manufacturing company tell me, "Well, we're not curing cancer here." Well, you might not be, but purpose isn't reserved for businesses who donate all their profits to charity or companies on the brink of life-saving science. Purpose works for big pharma on software and it's also relevant in manufacturing and in plumbing and in other businesses that might not seem so glamorous. Leaders who implement purpose have one thing in common, they believe in the dignity of their business. I asked one of our longtime clients, Patrick Hodges, the SVP of Sales for Blackbaud, about this. He started leading with purpose several years ago when he was the sales manager. Now several promotions later, he reports directly to the CEO.
