While you may hardcode credentials into your code, this is really a bad practice. Besides, you may use different credentials for different environments. Each developer could have his or her own local DB setup. Here's where environment variables come to the rescue. With environment variables, you may even add a layer of protection to your production environment by removing all credentials from the source code.
