What is a virtual instrument?
- [Narrator] Lab view programs center around the concept of virtual instrumentation. Which involves using customizable software, with modular hardware to create user defined measurement systems. An engineering workstation usually has a collection of equipment, that might include oscilloscopes and functioning generators, power supplies and digital multi meters, traditionally those were all stand alone bench-top instruments with their own controls and user interface and fixed functionality. Each box could only do what it's vendor built it to do. As technology advanced and PC's became ubiquitous, people started using software to replace large portions of that hardware. They used software to build the user interface and define the functionality of virtual instruments, which connected to modular instrumentation cards to preform the physical measurement. A single PC connected to a few measurement cards can replace a table…
