- [Instructor] Now let's talk about FM8. This is a really cool synthesizer. You may have seen FM7. Which is the one that came before it years back, but we've stuck with FM8 for quite a while because it's really easy to use, it sounds great, and it's just a great take on a synthesis technique known as frequency modulation. Now frequency modulation is a bit of a complex thing to understand because what we're actually doing is using two audio rate oscillators to modulate each other in terms of their frequency, and what we get are these very complex side bands. Which are great for creating complex lush tambers, lots of very natural sounds, percussive sounds, metallic sounds. You can really get a lot of texture, but it's different form the subtractive synthesis that a lot of classic synthesizers use. Such as a minimogue or a Korg MS-20.
