Join Karin Hutchinson for an indepth discussion in this video Solving a twostep equation when you must combine like terms first, part of Learning Algebra: Solving Equations.
Our last twostep equation example…is going to require a little cleanup…before we can begin solving.…For this equation, we're going to solve for x.…And the equation is 3x + 5 8x = 24.…Notice that on the left hand side,…we have two terms that are considered like terms.…The 3x and the 8x are considered like terms…because they both have the variable x.…We can combine like terms…before we begin solving.…
Remember that when you're combining like terms…you need to take the sign in front of each term.…So I'm going to rewrite the left hand side…with the like terms side by side.…We have 3x 8x + 5 = 24.…Now I'm going to combine these like terms…and 3x 8x or 3x + 8x is 5x.…
So my left hand side now reads… 5x + 5 = 24.…Now, we have a twostep equation…and we can begin solving.…I know that this 5 is the constant…and that's the 5 that I need to get rid of first.…So I'm going to bring down the left hand side…of the equation… 5x + 5…and I'm going to subtract 5…on the left hand side,…and then I need to remember to subtract 5…
