Join Karin Hutchinson for an indepth discussion in this video Solving equations with fractions that have different denominators, part of Learning Algebra: Solving Equations.
Let's take a look at another equation…that contains fractions.…For this equation, we're going to solve for r.…Notice that we have two fractions in this equation…and they have different denominators.…If I were to decide to multiply all terms…by the denominator four,…that would allow me to get rid of the 3/4,…but I would still have a fraction for 2/3,…because 2/3 times four would give me 8/3,…so that would not eliminate all of the fractions…in this equation.…
So I need to come up with a different rule…for how to get rid of the fractions…if the denominators are different,…if they are not the same.…And what we're going to do is we're going…to multiply all the terms…by the least common multiple.…The least common multiple is going to be the number…that will allow us to get rid of the fractions in one step.…So, how do we find the least common multiple?…And a lot of times you'll see that abbreviated LCM.…
Well, what we want to do is list the multiples…for four and three.…So the multiples for four would be four times one,…
