Join Karin Hutchinson for an indepth discussion in this video Solving addition equations by adding a positive number, part of Learning Algebra: Solving Equations.
In this lesson, we will solve addition equations.…There are four steps for solving addition equations.…These are four, very important steps…for solving all equations, and you may want…to jot them down in your notes.…The first step is to isolate the variable…on one side of the equation.…Remember, that means to get the variable by itself.…Then, you want to use opposite operations…to eliminate the terms,…in order to get that variable by itself.…
Our golden rules works with every equation,…and that is "Whatever you do to one side…"of the equation, you must do to the other side."…And last, you always want to check…your answer, by substituting into the original equation.…So, let's take a look at these four steps in action.…Let's solve for x, for the equation x + 20 = 15.…For this equation, our variable is x,…and x is the variable that we need to isolate…on the lefthand side, and that just means…we want to get that x by itself.…
That means I need to get rid of this number 20,…and we're going to use opposite operations…
