Join Karin Hutchinson for an indepth discussion in this video Solving absolute value equations, part of Learning Algebra: Solving Equations.
In this lesson, we're going to solve…an absolute value equation.…This equation is the absolute value…of x minus 10 equals 20.…Before we begin solving, let's think about this expression…inside of the absolute value.…If we were to take this expression out,…what number would we put inside…of those absolute value bars?…The absolute value of what number is equal to 20?…Well, we know that the absolute value of 20 is equal to 20.…
And is there another answer?…Is there another number where the absolute value…of that number is equal to 20?…And hopefully you remember that this could be negative 20.…Because the absolute value of negative 20…is also equal to 20.…So, now going back to this expression,…we know that this expression has to equal 20,…but it could also equal negative 20.…Because if this expression equals negative 20,…we're still going to end up with an absolute value…of positive 20.…
That's going to allow us, or help us,…to write two equations.…Because in order to solve this correctly,…we need to write two equations.…
