Exploring the basics parts of an equation
- As we begin this solving equations course, we will start by looking at the basic parts of an equation and important terminology. If you're comfortable with the basics, feel free to skip this section and move right into addition equations. Let's begin by taking a look at a typical equation. This equation is x plus 8 equals 10. An equation has two sides and the two sides are separated by an equal sign. All equations contain a variable. In this equation, x is the variable but your variable can be any letter of the alphabet. Equations will also contain numbers. Like in this equation, we have the numbers 8 and 10. Solving this equations means that you want to find a value for x that satisfies the equation. For example, in this equation, x plus 8 equals 10. We want our final answer to be in the form of, x equals, and then a value for x. This equation can be solved mentally.
