Join Karin Hutchinson for an indepth discussion in this video Exploring the basics parts of an equation, part of Learning Algebra: Solving Equations.
As we begin this solving equations course, we will start by looking at the basic parts of an equation and important terminology. If you're comfortable with the basics, feel free to skip this section and move right into addition equations. Let's begin by taking a look at a typical equation. This equation is x plus 8 equals 10. An equation has two sides and the two sides are separated by an equal sign. All equations contain a variable. In this equation, x is the variable but your variable can be any letter of the alphabet.
Equations will also contain numbers. Like in this equation, we have the numbers 8 and 10. Solving this equations means that you want to find a value for x that satisfies the equation. For example, in this equation, x plus 8 equals 10. We want our final answer to be in the form of, x equals, and then a value for x. This equation can be solved mentally. We know that x equals 2 because 2 plus 8 equals 10.
Two is the only answer that satisfies this equation because it is the only correct answer. So our final answer to this equation would be in the form of x equals 2. Now that you know that basic parts of an equation, you're ready to begin looking at the basic rules for solving equations. In the next lesson we will talk about the term "isolating the variable".
