- This is our current Testimonials Page. I'm really not a fan of the way this testimonial page looks. It's kind of weird having Testimonial 3, 4, and 5, and we have to click on them to actually see them. The other thing is that testimonials are frequently set on the sides of web pages as modules as opposed to actual Articles like this. And, people may see them as a decoration on the site rather than the focus of a web page. So, what I'd like to do at this point is I'd like to come up with a way that we can have a testimonial maybe rotate on the sides of the page.
Pick one of the testimonials and then display it in a module on the side of the web page. I think that would look a lot better and be more effective than what I have going on here right now. First thing I'm going to do, I'm going to go ahead and delete the link to Testimonials. I'm also going to delete the link to the thing there that says Menu Title. That was an example from a previous video. Then I will go ahead and configure the Newsflash module to display a rotating testimonial in a module position. To do this, we're going to come over here to Menus first, and Main Menu, and I'm going to delete Testimonials and this thing called Menu Titles.
So, I'm just going to put check marks by those and send them to the trash. And, if we come back here and say "Go to the home page," you'll see our links are gone here. The next thing I want to do is I'm going to go to Extensions, Module Manager and I'm going to add a new module. Up here at the top it's called "Articles-Newsflash." So, the Newsflash module, as it says, "will display a fixed number of Articles "from a specific Category or a set of Categories." In this case, we want just one Category.
First of all, let's give this a title. I'm going to say, "What people say about us." That'll be the title here. What's our Category? Well, it's not All Categories. I want it to just show the Testimonials. So we can select the Testimonials here from the list. And, we can have it hide or show any images or article title associated with it. Considering our article title is "Testimonial 1," "Testimonial 2," and so forth, I probably want to hide that article title.
And then you can have a Read More link if you want that. How many Articles are you going to show at a time? Right now it's set to five. I'm going to set it to one. In terms of the Order Results right now it's Published Date. You also have the option of a Created Date or some kind of Ordering that you could set up in the Article Manager. How many Hits each thing has gotten, or my personal favorite, Random. So, what's going to happen is, every time this page loads, it will choose one of those testimonials, at random, and display it on the web page.
This isn't a fade-in, fade-out kind of constant rotating type of module, although those do exist withing Joomla! as third party extensions that you can install. This is just going to pick one testimonial, reload it, and display it on the site every single time. Over on the right-hand side of the screen, let's pick a position for this. So, we have a lot going on on the right. Let's go on ahead and add to that. Down in the Protostar list of module positions, let's go ahead and pick the Right position, or position 7.
And we'll go ahead and say, "Save." Now, when we come back to the website and we hit "Refresh," we have this nice testimonial that appears over here on the side. And if I hit refresh again, this is going to rotate through some of these testimonials. Sometimes you'll see the same one twice in a row, or three times in a row. Remember, it's choosing them at random, and with only five options, it's completely possible it will choose the same one twice in a row or three times in a row. As for this right hand side, it's getting a little bit long, and it's really pushed our social media icons down here towards the bottom.
The Login Form is something that comes with Joomla!, and I'm not actually going to be making use of it here on the website, so I could just go ahead and turn that off now. Back here in the back end of Joomla!, we go ahead and say, "Save & Close" for our Newsflash. You can come to your Login Form then, and you can either unpublish it or you could trash it altogether. I'm just going to unpublish it, in case I decide I want it later, and then refresh the web page. Now, that's a little bit better.
We can see the testimonial, we can see the social media and on some of our longer pages, this is a much better balance for the page, like that. So, the Newsflash module can be used in a number of different ways. You can have one Category or many Categories. You can have one Article or five Articles. You can have images associated with them or not. I'm using this, actually, as a little testimonial rotator. The Newsflash module is really flexible and can add some nice testimonials to your website if you use it the way I did.
