Join Jen Kramer for an in-depth discussion in this video Update PHP in WAMP, part of Installing and Running Joomla! 3: Local and Web-Hosted Sites.
- [Instructor] Sometimes when you install Joomla…on your WAMP installation, it may have…the wrong version of PHP running.…PHP is software just like any other software.…And it has a lifecycle and occasionally…it comes to the end of that lifecycle…and it's no longer supported.…Joomla wants you to be safe and secure,…and so an arrow will come up informing you…that you are running a very old version of PHP,…and to please upgrade.…So you're gonna come down to your system tray…and click on the green W icon here.…
It's a left-click, and then you're going…to go to the PHP folder, and as you'll see here,…we're running PHP 5.5, that's one…of those outdated versions of PHP.…If you don't have newer versions…of PHP to choose from, I would recommend…that you go download a more recent version…of WAMP, which does come with more recent versions of PHP.…Alternatively, you can try to download…the PHP binary files and install those according…to the instructions on the WAMP website.…
Then you have choices here for other versions…of PHP that you need to run.…

Q: This course was updated on 05/30/2018. What changed?
A: Joomla no longer supports PHP 5.6 and lower and will issue an error message if it detects an outdated version on your host server. We added three videos that show how to resolve the error message, by updating PHP in your MAMP or WAMP stack.
