Beyond Flash: Creating animations for the modern web

- [Scott] Hi, my name is Scott Means, and I've been coding every day for a long, long time. I actually got my first coding job at Microsoft when I was 17, so I've seen a lot of technologies come and go. Animations have always been a powerful tool for quickly sharing concepts with your audience on the web, but after the death of Flash, embedded video became pretty much the only viable option, and it has limitations. It isn't responsive, it isn't mobile-friendly, and it doesn't interact with the user. With modern browsers, it's possible to create smooth, professional animations using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that look great on everything from a smartphone to a flat screen television. The challenge is learning to choose the right technology at the right time. In this course, we'll be building a dynamic presentation that uses every trick in the web development book to get the effects we want. We'll be using some classic techniques like CSS animations and DOM manipulation, as well as some newly well-supported browser features like CSS flexbox and HTML5 custom elements. We'll also explore animating SVGs using JavaScript and CSS styling, and we're gonna do all this while supporting all mainstream desktop and mobile browsers for a fully responsive user experience. No matter what your background, I'm hoping you'll find something in this course that will expand your horizons. The more tools you have in your toolbox, the easier it will be for you to apply the right technology to the right problem.
