- You know the fastest way to disengage your learners? Drown them in excessive content. Starting with a large volume of content is a poor, but common excuse for ineffective instruction. When beginning to create a new learning program, it's likely a welcome material and the topics already exist. There may be existing courses, PowerPoint presentation, product documentation, web resources, and how-to guides. These are all great references, but even this great bulk of resources won't contain content in the form needed for instruction. It may not contain any of the content you need for action-based learning. It's the developers responsibility to weed out content that is not conducive to an effective experience. Delivery of excessive content limits the opportunity to practice performance. At the same time, most sources of existing content are purely informational, just used for reference. They do not provide sufficient detail regarding the consequences of bad choices or poor performance…
