What you need to know

- [Instructor] During this course, we'll be using trial versions of the software. There are two reasons for this. The first is that you become completely new to the software and you want to test processes before you buy or commit. The second, and which I think is most important, is that you may already be part of an organization that's using InfraWorks but is new to ArcGIS, and it's always better to practice in a trial environment rather than one which is going to turned into a production one. Even practicing on production models can lead to problems, so do not complete these course exercises in a production environment. One other thing to bear in mind is that if you're part of an organization with an AEC collection subscription, get your account manager to check with your dealer. You may be eligible for an extended trial of ArcGIS Online. So that's one year instead of 30 days. It's worth checking. We're going to be using two pieces of software. Autodesk InfraWorks 2020.1, that's very important. It will not work in any previous versions of Autodesk InfraWorks. The other piece of software we're going to be using is Esri ArcGIS Online. We will need two users with email addresses and this is how we're going to set them up. Jan GIS is user 1. Now, obviously your usernames will be different to mine because the email addresses and accounts will be different. But we'll have user 1 and user 2. User 1 is Jane GIS. She will have an email address and she's going to be the one who sets up the ArcGIS Online trial account. Our second user, my second user, is John Engineer. He's going to have an email address. He's the one who's going to be working in Autodesk InfraWorks and he's also going to be part of the ArcGIS Online organization. So, user 1, my Jane user, will be working with ArcGIS Online, but not with InfraWorks. John, user 2, will be working with InfraWorks and ArcGIS Online. Other things to remember is that this course is aimed at people who are familiar with Autodesk InfraWorks, but are new to Esri ArcGIS Online. We are not going to going through things like how to add a data source to a model, or how to navigate, or how to add or delete. I'm assuming that you know all of that already. Another important point is that your end results will not be identical to mine. This is because, first of all, you're Esri ArcGIS Online account will have a different organization name. You will have different users. When you're working InfraWorks your model output will be different when you're drawing or editing. The process is important. We don't want to try and end up with identical input or output. So those are just some things to keep in mind as we head into our course, so buckle up, let's get ready. Finally, in the good to know section is that if you're working on a machine which hasn't previously had any Autodesk Geospatial products install on it, so no AutoCAD Map, no AutoCAD Civil 3D, then just follow this link to install the ArcGIS Projection Engine Data. And this is just something that will help you out when you're using the Autodesk connector for ArcGIS. It helps you avoid errors that may show up with the coordinate systems. So just check to see if it's in there. If it's already in there, you don't have to re-install it. It's not something that updates every time the software updates, but it is good to know that you may need it. Just check that it's there. And now, let's get started.
