- [Instructor] Beyond just designing roads we can also design a bridge and bridge components at this early stage in our design. So what we're going to look at now is the fly-out that talks about how we can design, review and engineer bridges. We're going to start by creating a design using a precast girder bridge. So notice we took our design for our roadway and we got a little bit of a curve, a the high point here.
We're going to put a bridge right in this point and we're in the precast bridge start proposal we're going to create a new proposal, precast bridge underscore end proposal and I'm going to just rotate around and notice I say precast girder bridge, it asked me to select a station I'm just going to pick somewhere around here and then it comes up and says all right tell me the start station, end station, length, and so on, or I could just type it in and we're going to start at station seven zero zero.
I'm going to tab over, and it's in feet and length of our bridge is 400 feet and that sets the end station to 1100 and I press enter. I don't move the mouse because that will reset any of those values as it believes you want to graphically make those adjustments. And it puts that bridge in for me using the precast concrete design. And notice that we have the ability to make adjustments to this.
For example we can select and go from a precast to a steel plate which we'll do in the next exercise. We can select the assembly, you can look at the different types of templates that we have to work with and select the correct one. You can change the design standard, you can change how many piers, so we'll put four piers in instead of three. And you can make adjustments to the bearings and location and height of all of these portions of the bridge and not only the bridge itself but also the piers.
I can select each pier and make adjustments to the pier. For example maybe I don't want this enhanced standard pier, I'm going to use a different type of pier component maybe a flared two column. It will change just that pier to that two column. We can create an offset, that offset we can do graphically or we can do right here and say that we're going to set that offset to something like 320 feet.
It will slide it down a little bit. And all these other values that you can make adjustments to, just for that pier. So you can spend a lot of time creating a good accurate design that is visually appealing with regard to your bridge. And the bridge is going to be accurate we're going to run an analysis on it later in this chapter.
