Import and link Excel data as tables

We certainly never want to retype verify data when we can import and link into our systems. This definitely reduces our error. The only time we want to retouch data is when it's absolutely necessary and we define processes to do that. It is important to understand the distinction between importing and linking. Importing is essentially a copy of the data at the time you import it. Linking however maintains a live link to the data, so that when the source data is updated everywhere that link is used is also updated. Let's go import and link into our database. So I'm in my sample database, and we have the manager's table that we created. If it's open you can go ahead and close it. What we want to do now is import in the department list names that's contained in our Excel file. Go to the external data tab, I'll go to new data source, I'll choose from file, and I'll choose Excel, because that's what it's in. I'll browse to my exercise files and I'll choose my original file.
