A look at a magazine: ESPN

- ESPN is a magazine beautifully designed for sports fans who want more than they can get on TV. More in depth, read it at your own pace. So, it's an interesting combination. The design needs the visual excitement of sports, plus it needs the formality and quiet of long text. So, to do this, the magazine is physically bigger, half way between a glossy and a tabloid. The bigger size allows for bigger graphics, a slightly bigger point size. You can air out the type a bit, because there's a lot of reading to do, and you still have extra white space you can use for pause and for silence. The excitement is conveyed by big pictures, bold graphics, sharp angles, hard edges, and the red, white, black color theme. In contrast, the text is very formal, very quiet, fully justified, without many subheads. I really like this.
