Join Tony Harmer for an in-depth discussion in this video calibre and Sigil (where to get them and what they do), part of Creating Ebooks for the Kindle.
You might be surprised to discover than an ePub is, essentially, a small self contained, pre-packaged website. Here's a file in my Macintosh finder. See pg11.epub just there. The icon of it showing is for iBooks, because that's my preferred reader on my desktop machine. I, I've cracked that file open earlier on, and if I go into that and show you what's in there, you'll see that it is a bunch of HTML files, some CSS files, an OPF file describing the content, and a few other things in there.
In fact, I can even open up these files in a browser. So, if I pop across to a browser, just here. I'm in Safari, and you can see that I'm in to this file just here. If I go back, there's the top of this particular document. And I could use it just as a website on my system. However, it needs packaging differently for your browser. And so, that's why they're contained in that particular folder structure. So, we need special tools to get in there and work on those, and so two exist, unfortunately, neither of them are going to break the bank, as they're both supported by donations.
The first of which is Sigel. If I just pop into Sigel, where I've got this file open. Here, you can see I've got a viewer in the middle just there, I've got a table of contents on the right-hand side. I've got the file structure on the left and a series dedicated tools on the top there and I've also got Calibre. And here it is inside of Calibre so these are a range of files, I've gone for a short range just there at the moment. I've also got a viewer, I can open up for view, like so.
I've got some other information, if I just bring the viewer across onto this screen, this will open up my other screen. There is that file just inside of there. And again, I've got some tools in a much more simplified toolbar across the top there. To get a hold of these is fairly easy, so if I pop across here and show you Calibre is available at calibre-ebook.com. Once on there, you can go to the Download tab, just there, and download it for your operating system.
It's available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. And then you can visit the help area, just there, which will help you with the fairly simple installation of Calibre. Sigil is available at code.google.com. Searching on the term sigil should get you there within the first two or three links. And then you can download the product from here. You can see there's a little tab there for downloads and you can download whichever operating system version works for you. And in the project Home tab, you can see the Sigil user's guide just there.
Which, again, will help you with installation and general use of the product. So, in this movie, you learned about the tools Calibre and Sigil. Where you can get them. How you can download them. And how to find the instructions on installation. We still got one more tool we need to get, and we will look at that in the next movie.
