- [Instructor] George Kerscher, chief innovations officer of the DAISY Consortium and a digital publishing accessibility expert says, when I first got involved in accessible publishing there was no accessibility within mainstream published printed content. Not until initiatives that utilize chop and scan, source file conversions, and recordings for library for the blind did progress begin concerning the accessibility of a wider range of print content. This is a quote from an article that he published in 2002 called The Soundproof Book, which advocated for more openness in digital publishing while pointing out that things like DRM and walled gardens were keeping ebooks out of the hands of the readership who could really capitalize on the innately flexible nature of ebooks. To realize what I think of as the truly democratic promise of digital publishing, we as publishers and developers need to pay closer attention to make better ebooks.
