Welcome

- If you've never made a magazine, the place to start is not by trying to make one. You know, InDesign file, columns, pouring in text, placing photos, trying to arrange it to look nice. Nor is it with me explaining to you the details of a deck head or a pull quote or a page folio. Those things are necessary, but they're flat and they're technical. Magazines are living things. They're people, their minds, and points of view. They can be fun. They can be exciting. They can be engrossing and enriching. They can be shallow and frivolous. They have voices and they have styles. They speak and they speak in a way that no other medium can. I think the best way to learn magazine design is the way I learned and that's by spending time at the magazine stand looking at them. So for this beginning magazine design course, that's what we're going to do. I have lots of magazines here and I'd like to sit with you for the next hour or so and page through them and talk about what's going on. Let's take a look.
